Chestnut Roasted Recipe
By Anna O.A healthy snack during the holidays to enjoy a good movie or with your favorite cup of wine, hot tea, eggnog, you name it.
Buy about 1 pound of chestnuts. Make sure they are big because it will be easier to peel.
You have 2 options for "roasting chestnuts."
1. Oven
2. Gas stove
Preparing your chestnuts:
- cut a large X on the flat side of each chestnut all the way through the skin. The purpose is to allow steam to escape gently instead of your chestnuts exploding from pressure.
- If using the oven, make sure you preheat it to 425 F.
a. Place your chestnues on a shallow baking pan and put in the oven for about 30 minutes.
b. Shake the pan few times during roasting to rotate chestnuts and they can cook evenly.
c. Once you see the skin coming off and the nice roasting color of your chestnuts, remove pan and let cool a little bit.
Enough to be able to remove the peel. If you wait until they are really cold, it will be difficult to PEEL.
- If using the gas stove.
a. Place your chestnuts on a pan. Roast your chestnuts over low heat to avoid burning them. With this method, you have to check your chestnuts constantly to rotate them.
b. Some people recommend boiling the nuts first before roasting. I rather just roast them because flavor is much delicious and you can smell and hear the "chestnuts roasted on an open fire...." love this Christmas song! Do you?
If you want to save time and just dont have patience for roasting chestnuts... you can always buy a pre roasted chestnut package. But, I am telling you, it is so much fun to roast the chestnuts yourself to get that special feeling of having your very own home made Roasted Chestnuts.
